Tybee Island- Mr. Robert C. "Bob" Martin, 77, died Thursday, April 17, 2008 at his home under the care of Odyssey Healthcare Hospice.
Bob was a 1949 graduate of Benedictine Military School and served in the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for over 23 years. He wore every stripe from Private to Chief Warrant Officer, 4th Class and was awarded numerous decorations, including the Bronze Star. During his career, he served outside of the United States for 19 years, lived in many different countries and completed three tours of Viet Nam. He retired as Deputy Post Engineer at Hunter Army Airfield. Bob was a life member and past Post Commander of the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 8, and a member of the American Legion, Post 154, at Tybee Island. He was preceded in death by his parents, Capt. John and Rebecca Martin; his first wife of 37 years, Betty Brock Martin and his daughter, Patti Martin Simmons.
Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Fran Martin of Tybee Island; daughter, Beth Martin Patton and her husband Jeff of Bethlehem, GA; stepdaughter, Donna White of Savannah; stepson, Mark White of Bozeman, MT; sisters, Sara and her husband, Lloyd Black of Savannah and Ellen and her husband Paul Mallory of N. Augusta, SC; six grandchildren, Jennifer Patton Brewer and her husband Jon, Katie Huckaby and her husband Michael, all of Bethlehem, GA, Andrew Stembridge of Atlanta, GA, Matthew Stembridge of Darien, GA, Dewey and Brock Simmons of Brunswick, GA; three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 5:00p.m. - 7:00 p.m., Monday, April 21, 2008 at the Islands Chapel of Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel with The Reverend P. James Costigan officiating.
Burial: Greenwich Section of Bonaventure Cemetery with full military honors.
